Zach Wade, New CEO and Treasurer of MakeOffices: Q&A

MakeOffices is excited to announce that Zach Wade has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer and Treasurer of the company. As a national coworking leader with locations in Washington D.C., Chicago and Philadelphia, Zach’s leadership signals the next phase of growth as we continue our momentum forward.

Prior to joining MakeOffices, Zach was a Principal at MRP Realty, a leading real estate investor and developer in the Mid-Atlantic region, Philadelphia and New York.  Zach brings with him immense experience in commercial real estate investment. He even spent several months as a member at MakeOffices while MRP headquarters was being renovated, which led to MRP’s early investment in the company. Zach was appointed to the MakeOffices Board of Directors in 2014.

We couldn’t be happier with Zach Wade joining our family and helping us and our members achieve continued success. To get to know our new CEO, Manu Aggarwal, our Head of Digital & Growth Marketing, sat down with Zach and learned everything from his background to what inspires him every day.

Manu: So, tell us a little more about you.

Zach: I am 42, have been married for 14 years and have two boys who are 12 and 10 years old.  Family and friends are very important to me, and I am committed to being there for both in the greatest capacity possible.  I feel extremely fortunate to have been on great teams throughout my life, playing college lacrosse for UNC-Chapel Hill, joining the MRP Realty team, and now I could not be more thrilled to join the MakeOffices team.  For the past couple of years, I have been pleased to serve on the MakeOffices Board of Directors, and feel very connected and committed to the MakeOffices family.

Manu: You joined the board of MakeOffices a few years ago. What drew you to the company?

Zach: I was a member at MakeOffices for three months when we were renovating our corporate office at MRP.  It was the most energizing experience of my career in real estate.  Being part of the strong community and seeing the collaboration between members from different industries was extremely powerful; it inspired me to create new strategies and products in my field and I fostered many lasting relationships.  I was already on the MakeOffices board, but my time as a member allowed me to experience the value the company was bringing to teams firsthand. As a board member, I saw the potential of MakeOffices and the coworking industry as a whole and was exposed to different, more innovative ways of working.  I’m excited to see where we can take the company and move forward together as I transition from my position as a board member to active involvement as CEO.  

Manu: That’s quite the story. Can you explain more about the potential of coworking and why you decided to make the leap from commercial real estate?

Zach: I see a lot of similarities between real estate development and coworking. At the end of the day, running both businesses are about great strategy, strong thoughtful execution, creating highly functional and attractive spaces,  and offering consistently great customer service. While coworking is a relatively new industry, there’s no question that it’s here to stay, and I’m thrilled to take part in a growing industry that is providing real value to growing companies, entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Manu: Now that you’re taking the reins, what is your vision for the company’s growth and where do you see the company in the next five years?

Zach: MakeOffices is at the beginning of its growth journey and I see the company doubling in size in the next couple of years.  I have seen the evolution of the company since the beginning and know that we have a tremendous foundation on which to build.  MakeOffices is a strong platform for companies across all industries to experience the workplace in a different, more collaborative way while still remaining productive.  Not only do our community managers make sure teams have an awesome environment to work in, but they also help our members make the connections they need to grow their businesses.

For these reasons and more, I’m certain we’ll continue to attract great members and continue our growth over the next five years. We’re known as a trusted coworking company for businesses that take success seriously, and I’m proud to say that MakeOffices has helped teams across all industries thrive. The past three years have been a sort of “test kitchen” for us with different office vibes, and we’ve learned a lot about what our members want and need. Those learnings will shape our expansion and take our member experience to the next level in the years to come.    

Manu: You spoke a lot about MakeOffices’ commitment to members and their experiences. Should they expect anything to change with you as CEO?  

Zach: The guiding light of our company has been–and always will be–our customer experience.  Our members are the reason why we’re here, and we are committed to continuing to offer the highest level of service and hospitality.  Every decision at MakeOffices starts off with the question, “does it enhance our member experience?” because we committed to fostering a sense of community and collaboration and we are here to provide members with real leverage to grow their businesses.  I am really excited to meet with all of our members, learn more about what they do and figure out how we at MakeOffices can help them succeed.

Manu: What makes the MakeOffices team so successful?

Zach: The team at MakeOffices is committed to exceptional customer service, cutting-edge creativity, and the highest possible integrity. Each person on our team is an expert in their field and works incredibly hard to make this company and our members a huge success.

Manu: So, what excites you most about this next step in your career?

Zach: I consider myself an intellectually curious person, and having so much innovation from members in every single corner of MakeOffices really inspires me and puts gas in my tank. I’m thrilled to be working with such a passionate team at MakeOffices and to continue to find more ways to support our members.  As I mentioned, when I was a member at MakeOffices, I experienced an incredibly exciting period of personal and professional growth, and I can’t wait to experience that tenfold with the opportunity to lead this company.

Manu: Seems like an exciting next step. What has your proudest achievement in your many years in business?

Zach:  I helped grow MRP Realty from six people in 2006 to over 160 people today throughout the Northeast United States.  I’m extremely proud of the strong brand and cohesive culture we have built, and am grateful for the people I had the opportunity to work with. My greatest contribution to every team I have been fortunate enough to be a part of is my passion for what I do and for the people I’m doing it with. I’m beyond excited to join the MakeOffices family and continue to grow this amazing team and company.
